Like burying metals underground

OpSec is like burying metals underground.

Let's assume that everyone is given the same metal, and is required to bury and hide it underground. If your metal has nothing special to it, no one bats an eye. But if it does have an attraction, people will want to make use of whatever specialty it has. So, those that want it will dig it. Some will save their time using a digging tool, or using a metal detector, or better, use an excavator.

These are threats and attacks on your precious metal. Attacks are random and highly unexpected. What you can do, however, are preventive measures such as burying them far from others, using thick vegetation as a cover-up, covering your tracks after burying, putting trip wires or detectors, building a secured perimeter around it, burying it deeper than others, covering the steel with a wrap or anything to deflect or deceit the metal detector, and more.

Of course, you can put up a signboard, take a selfie where you hide the metal, and share it with the world. But you've only got yourself to blame when it goes missing and someone benefits from it.

It is an analogy. The metal is your information and the measures are well, preventive security measures that you can take to protect your information. Take the concepts, apply it into daily life.
